This is more than a clinical role—it is an opportunity to establish and shape a vital healthcare service for a Tribal community while serving as the subject matter expert and leader for the program's future growth and success.
Seeking an experienced and motivated Optometrist to lead the development of its brand-new in-house Optometry Clinic serving the Yakutat Service Area, primarily Indian Health Service (IHS)-eligible Alaska Native beneficiaries.
YCHC is a tribally operated healthcare organization providing primary care, urgent care, emergency services, behavioral health, community health, and visiting specialty services to a remote Alaska community. This is a unique opportunity for a provider who is interested in making a lasting impact by building an optometry program from the ground up.
CLINIC START-UP RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop the clinical scope of services and workflows for the optometry clinic.
- Draft policies, standing orders, and practice guidelines consistent with IHS and Tribal healthcare standards.
- Develop referral pathways and PRC coordination processes.
- Develop administrative and clinical policies supporting billing, documentation, compliance, and quality assurance.
- Assist with equipment selection, dispensary setup, and inventory management.
- Develop EHR templates, forms, and documentation standards.
- Support coding, billing workflows, and reimbursement processes.
- Develop training materials and workflows for support staff.
- Lead go-live implementation and operational readiness activities.
ONGOING CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide comprehensive eye examinations and vision care services.
- Diagnose and manage eye diseases within scope of practice.
- Perform diabetic eye screenings and preventive services.
- Coordinate referrals and PRC documentation for specialty care.
- Maintain accurate and compliant patient records.
- Provide culturally responsive care to Alaska Native and Tribal patients.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Requires strong clinical judgment
- Experience working independently in a rural healthcare setting
- Familiarity with IHS & Tribal health systems
- The Optometrist must be capable of balancing direct patient care with administrative and operational responsibilities necessary to establish and sustain a compliant, efficient, and culturally responsive optometry program

LICENSURE REQUIREMENT
- Current Alaska optometry license or eligibility to obtain
- Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree from an accredited institution
