- Will see more than just ortho cases

Preoperative Procedures

OR Setup: Review surgeon preference cards, check case carts, and gather necessary equipment and supplies.

Sterilization: Ensure all instruments are sterile and functional.

Sterile Field: Perform the surgical scrub, don gown and gloves, and arrange instruments on the Mayo stand and back table.

Counts: Perform initial counts of sponges, sharps, and instruments with the circulator.

Patient Prep: Assist in transferring, positioning, and prepping (cleaning/disinfecting) the patient.

Draping: Assist the team in draping the patient to establish a sterile field.
Intraoperative Procedures

Anticipation: Anticipate the surgeon's needs, passing instruments quickly and efficiently.

Maintaining Sterility: Monitor the sterile field constantly to prevent contamination.

Specimens: Receive, handle, and label surgical specimens.

Medications: Prepare and pass medications, hemostatic agents, and irrigation solutions.

Support: Hold retractors, cut sutures, and assist with robotic arms or cameras as needed.

Counts: Perform additional counts as necessary, especially during cavity closure.
Postoperative Procedures

Wound Care: Apply sterile dressings and bandages to the incision site.

Cleanup: Remove dirty instruments, sharps, and waste, ensuring proper disposal and decontamination.

Turnover: Assist in cleaning the operating room and restocking supplies for the next procedure.
Key Safety Standards
Safety Protocols: Adhere to OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standards, especially for sharps handling.
Confidentiality: Maintain patient privacy (HIPAA compliance).

Personal Hygiene: Maintain short, natural nails (no polish/false nails) and clean attire.
