Additional Details:

  • Provide medical optometry services, including glaucoma OCT and retinopathy testing
  • Diagnose, manage, and treat diseases of the eye and visual system
  • Examine eyes, assess visual acuity, visual fields, and overall ocular health
  • Prescribe corrective lenses and evidence-based therapeutic treatments
  • Prescribe medications, therapies, and procedures; refer surgical cases to Anchorage
  • Identify ophthalmic manifestations of systemic disease and refer appropriately
  • Educate patients on eye hygiene, care, and treatment options
  • Refer patients when care exceeds licensure, facility, or provider limitations
  • Provide clinical guidance and support to Community Health Aides
  • Coordinate and conduct in-house and field clinics at Kanakanak Hospital and affiliated villages
  • Work under the supervision of the Optometry Manager/Optometrist
  • Maintain cultural sensitivity with patients and co-workers
  • 5-10 patients per day

REQUIREMENTS

  • 3 years of experience as Optometrist desired, Hospital setting experience is preferred. Experience in urgent eye care management is important.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skillset necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned unit in a rural eyecare setting and under a limited access setting.
  • The provider must demonstrate extensive knowledge of ocular pathology in relation to patients of all ages (womb to tomb), and all demographics and to provide the care needed as described in the assigned unit's procedures.

  • Licensed Optometrist
  • Must have AK License


ABOUT THE FACILITY

This facility includes 21 village clinics that are accredited by Joint Commission and are staffed by Community Health aides. Our Community Health Aide Program (CHAP) plays a very important role in village health services. Our health aides can provide Preventative, Acute, Chronic, and Emergency care within their scope of practice using the Community Health Aide Manual (CHAM) and reporting to a referral Physician at the Kanakanak hospital. They work closely with our case management and assist many other departments that include, but not limited to: Optometry, Audiology, Diabetes, Medical Staff, Dental, and Infant learning to ensure our patients are getting the appropriate and essential care that they need.
